Cleaning
For cleaning we use ENJO, a fibre based technology scientifically proven to be more effective than chemicals.
Recycling
We compost fruit and vegetable waste in our worm farm and our compost bin. The Christchurch City Council are proactive with dealing with waste, and to this end they collect garden waste, and compost it, eventually selling compost back to the general public. Recycling is important to us, and we encourage all our guests to do the same. Any paper that is not needed at Homelea is shredded for use in the worm farm and garden.

Our Garden
Situated in the centre of a city we have an amazing garden, the produce of which we share with our guests for breakfast, and the occasional dinner. We make jams, jellies, and preserves. From quince paste, cranberry juice, peaches, artichokes, tomatoes, garlic, beans, spinach and rocket. Any excess is shared with the local community - Pataka Kai at Kohinga St Albans Community Centre.

ENJO Cleaning Products
For cleaning we use ENJO, a fibre based technology scientifically proven to be more effective than chemicals. We were impressed that after the three-year life span of the fibres, ENJO New Zealand take back and recycle the fibres so not impacting on our carbon footprint. We also use cloth bags rather than plastic for carrying supermarket goods. Guests are encouraged to reuse towels to reduce the impact of washing materials on water and the environment.

Energy Efficient Appliances
When Homelea was repaired following the devastating earthquakes of 2010/2011 we made a conscious effort to ensure energy star efficient appliances were purchased. Energy star efficient appliances help to reduce the amount of carbon pollution being added to the atmosphere.

We take pride in being able to provide for all of our guests including those with dietary requirements. We are on our way to being totally gluten-free. As well as providing for all our guests we also support local businesses for many things, in particular, for Heartland Coffee. Guests will be pleased to know they are able to hire a couple of Bicycles/Helmets as a mode of easy transport around Christchurch during their stay.
